The Rio Casaletto has its source in the Affondatore district, near the hamlet of Fortino in the municipality of Casaletto Spartano, on the slopes of Mount 'Buviero' (923 m). Known as the 'Sorgitore' stream, it bathes several districts and is fed by the water from many springs, the most important of which are: 'Scururo', 'Chiaggia Rossa', 'Capello' and 'Mariongione'.
Previously, it was also augmented by the important 'Melette' spring, but since the 1950s, it has served to supply the Basso Bussento consortium aqueduct. The latter supplies four towns with drinking water: Casaletto, Battaglia, Tortorella, Torraca and part of Sapri. The river, two thirds of which flows through the territory of the municipality of Casaletto, is 22 km long. It has the Giardenaso stream as its left tributary and flows into the Bussento, of which it is in turn a left tributary. Due to its water flow and particular slope, the Rio Casaletto water outflow has always been used as a power generator. Along its course, a series of mills, now definitively abandoned, and an ironworks, on whose foundations a still functioning hydroelectric power station was built in the early years of the century, have sprung up in every era. Currently, the water of the Rio Casaletto, together with that of the Bussento, feeds the Bussento hydroelectric power station, the one located near the SS 517 Bussentina bridge. The Rio Casaletto is the southernmost watercourse in Cilento and, therefore, in Campania, and is the main left tributary of the Bussento river; the right tributaries are the Sciarapotamo torrent and the Calleo torrent. In the valley below the village of Casaletto Spartano, the Rio Casaletto probably formed a lake basin at the beginning of the Quaternary period. This is confirmed by the flat position of the 'Isca' (a word from the Greek-Italian dialect, meaning bank on the side or shore, to be interpreted as 'land on the riverbank') and the 'Chiana', which were the bed of this lake. The basin emptied in later times, due to erosion of the limestone sill that contained it, these hypotheses should be supported by relevant studies aimed at identifying lacustrine or fluvio-lacustrine deposits. The importance of the Rio Casaletto is confirmed by the considerable degree of biodiversity as well as the low impact of anthropic influence, which has earned it recognition as a SCI (Site of Community Interest) area with the identifying name: "Montagne di Casalbuono".
